Discovering St David

Visit the place where St David changed the spiritual life of Wales…

Three miles south of Tregaron lies the village and church of Llanddewi Brefi. It is the church associated with Saint David, and the Welsh word Brefi refers to cattle lowing in the pastures and streams around the village.

Inside the church today are Celtic stones dating back to the 6th century, including the beautiful, simple St David’s Cross.

The tradition says that here David preached against the Pelagian heresy, and as he spoke the ground rose beneath his feet and his voice was amplified. David goes on to become the Patron Saint of Wales. Today you you can explore this quiet valley which runs between Tregaron and Lampeter, with its small villages and ancient churches.

The witness of the early Christian Celtic saints is everywhere across the landscape of South Wales. The quiet and sense of connection to the Celtic past is very strong here…
